Blogging is overwhelming; especially if you are new to it. What is the best platform? How often do I post? What is my niche? The list goes on. When I started my blog 4 years ago I had no clue what Twitter, SEO and google analytics were. I was completely lost. Fortunately; after friends helped me, I found my way. Hopefully, this list of the best WordPress plugins for beginner bloggers will help you navigate the waters a bit easier.
These aren’t in any particular order. Hopefully, you will see more traffic after adding them and feel less lost in the world of blogging.
WordPress is already a great platform for SEO (search engine optimization) but Yoast gives it that extra boost. While this plugin goes the extra mile to take care of all the technical optimization, it first and foremost helps you write better content. Yoast SEO forces you to choose a focus keyword when you’re writing your articles, and then makes sure you use that focus keyword everywhere. Keywords are the key to higher optimization on google.
I don’t know anyone that wants their blog spammed with weirdo comments. That is where this plug-in comes in handy. Used by millions, Akismet is quite possibly the best way in the world to protect your blog from spam. It keeps your site protected even while you sleep.
Revive Old Posts
(formerly tweet old posts)
This little gem is a time saver, and who doesn’t want less time scheduling and more time writing. It is easy to install and customize. This WordPress plugin helps you to keep your old posts alive by sharing them and driving more traffic to them from twitter, facebook or linkedin. It also helps you to promote your content. You can set time and number of posts to share to drive more traffic. I love that you can include categories/tags to exclude so you aren’t sharing old contests from your site.
With blogging comes social media, it’s unavoidable. If you want to amplify your content you MUST be active on social media. You don’t have to use all of the platforms, lord knows there are a lot. Choose the few that best suit you and work with it. It takes time to grow the numbers and amplification but it does work wonders. This plug-in adds a super easy SocialBox widget which displays various statistics from Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Youtube, Vimeo, Instagram, Pinterest, SoundCloud, Dribbble, Forrst, GitHub and MailChimp.
About Me 3000
Some may disagree with this one, but I feel it is important for your readers and brands to know a little about you. It should be featured on your site, be it homepage or another page. Keep it close to your social box so the content flows well and looks nice. With this plug in you can easily add an “About Me” widget to your sidebar and include a head shot. When brands visit your site they want to know who you are.
There you have it, my top five list for beginner bloggers. It is pretty simple, and helps you amplify your site in many different ways. Let me know what works and what doesn’t; I would love to hear your feedback.
